The Syracuse Opera presents “The Flying Dutchman” on Friday and Sunday.
Catherine Wolff knew a fully-staged production of “Dutchman,” with the cost of huge ship sets, costumes and experienced singers, was out of Syracuse Opera’s reach.
“It’s been on my to-do list for a decade and we kept setting it aside for budgetary reasons,” said Wolff, general and artistic director of Syracuse Opera.
So, Wolff got creative and decided to present Wagner’s opera as a multimedia production. The four lead singers will perform concert style and in formal attire, not costumes. Instead of sets, locally-produced videos will be projected onto the sails suspended above the stage. The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and an expanded Syracuse Opera Chorus of 60 singers will be on stage.
The money saved from this novel presentation has been invested in hiring singers.
