Just steps away from the Connective Corridor and Onondaga Creekwalk, construction is moving ahead on Creekwalk Commons, a new student housing project coming to the heart of downtown.

Syracuse Creekwalk Commons — Project highlights at a glance

  • 69 apartments housing 146 students
  • 8,000 square feet of first floor retail space
  • Named for the Onondaga Creekwalk, a pedestrian and bicycle trail that runs adjacent to the Onondaga Creek and around the project
  • Located at 324 West Water Street, steps away from the Connective Corridor and Armory Square
  • Both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments
  • Each apartment will be fully furnished and the building will have:  State of the art telecommunications and security system;  Laundry facilities; Fitness center; Gathering areas; Study rooms and studio space; Storage facilities
  • To be completed in July, 2014, with occupancy in August 2014
  • Adjacent to and connecting to 1,100 car City owned public parking garage

The project is designed to serve multiple colleges and universities, and the following have provided support letters for the project, attesting to their student housing need:

  • Syracuse University
  • SUNY Oswego (which has a satellite campus in downtown Syracuse, just a short distance from the project)
  • SUNY Upstate Medical University
  • SUNY ESF
  • St. Joseph’s School of Nursing
  • Onondaga Community College


Syracuse University Downtown:

SU operates a number of downtown programs in addition to “the Warehouse” which bring students downtown to study, work and volunteer.  These include:

  • The Connective Corridor and Near Westside Initiative
  • Student Sandbox incubator/accelerator- US EDA University Center @ The Tech Garden
  • WISE Center (Whitman School of Business women’s entrepreneurship program) @ The Tech Garden
  • School of Education program at Peck Hall downtown
  • SU Arts Engage downtown
  • Janklow Arts Leadership program downtown
  • Newhouse School’s MindLab downtown
  • Film programs in partnership with Syracuse Film Festival downtown
  • Lerner Center in the Near Westside
  • Arts and Sciences programs in the Near Westside;
  • Students participating in cultural venues along the Connective Corridor and in the Near Westside such as 601 Tully, LaCasita, Redhouse Arts Center
  • Students participating in the Shaw Center for Public and Community Service
  • Students participating in the Maxwell School’s Community Indicators projects at the CNY Philanthropy Center

The Warehouse serves as home for a number of SU and community programs, including: the Point of Contact Gallery;  Goldring Arts Journalism Program; UPSTATE: SU’s School of Architecture’s Design and Research Center; Syracuse Poster Project; the Photography and Literacy Project (PAL Project), a program of Syracuse University’s Coalition of Museum and Art Centers (CMAC); and a classroom for the Everson Museum of Art’s e-tags (Everson Teen Art Gallery and Studio) program.

The Sutton Company, property manager for Creekwalk Commons has conducted market research and focus groups with students at the participating colleges and universities as part of the project development.  With respect to Syracuse University, that analysis demonstrated the need for additional student housing and noted that in recent years, SU has had to house some of its students in private hotel rooms because of gap in student housing.
