The Everson Museum of Art presents the second installment of The Edge of Art: New York State Artists Series, an exploration of artist’s books titled “Fit to Be Bound.” The first survey of its kind at the Everson, “Fit to Be Bound” will be on view April 17 through July 11.

“Fit to Be Bound” showcases a broad range of artist books created by artists currently living in New York. The exhibition explores various means by which contemporary artists expand the notion of the book form, from the traditional to the sculptural, from paper to mixed-media, from small-scale to oversized. Thirty-four artists from 12 counties are included in the exhibition.

“We are particularly pleased to highlight this art form and encourage participation by artists working in this genre,” says Debora Ryan, Everson Museum of Art senior curator. “These artists employ a diverse range of paper and mixed-media to present books of all forms and sizes that pose intriguing questions for viewers to consider, such as, ‘What is a book?’

Four artists were invited to participate: Miriam Schaer, a multimedia book artist; Tatana Kellner, a photographer, printmaker, and book maker; Claire Maziarczyk, who creates decorative papers known as pastepaper patterns; and Drew Goerlitz, a sculptor currently teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Thirty additional artists were selected by three jurors: Debora Ryan; Peter Verheyen, Head of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University Library; and Hannah Frieser, director of Light Work at Syracuse University.
