We’ve come a long way since the first photograph was taken 180 years ago. Advances in photo technology allow us to take our cell phones out and snap a picture each time we are visually inspired. As these photos are viewed almost exclusively from the screen of phones or computers, the physical experience of viewing a traditional photograph is often lost.
PHONOGRAPHY is a photography exhibit including over 75 local, national and international cell phone photographers who have taken their cell phone photos off the screen and onto the walls of The Gallery at The Tech Garden for a month long exhibition mounted by guest curators Theresa Barry and Derek Bryant.
Theresa Barry is the former owner of Razzberry in Armory Square, and is a member of 40 Below’s Public Art Task Force. Theresa volunteers much of her time to creative projects throughout Central New York.
Derek Bryant is from Suffern, NY and a graduate of SUNY ESF in Landscape Architecture. He decided to make Syracuse his home after graduating in 2007. He is actively involved in the arts and cultural community in Central New York.
“When Theresa and Derek approached me with the idea of displaying photographs taken exclusively with cell phone cameras, I thought it was a great way to explore how everyday technology allows anyone with a cell phone to take a snapshot of the world in a creative way” says Artist in Residence Ty Marshal. “PHONOGRAPHY represents the intersection of art and technology in a physically visual way and is a perfect fit for the Gallery at Tech Garden.”
To make it easier for those “photographers” from the global community to participate, a slideshow of cell phone photographs will be projected onto the walls of the gallery as a compliment to the physical exhibit.
Smart phone users can preview some of the photographs on Instagram using the hashtag: #syracusephonographyshow
This season, Ty Marshal is inviting community members who wish to practice their curatorial skills to participate in a “guest curator” series at The Gallery at The Tech Garden. The Guest Curator series offers the opportunity for individuals to organize art showcases that explore the nexus of art, technology and commerce. “Recognizing that there is a growing group of amateur curators in Central New York, I was inspired by Theresa and Derek to create a program that can foster individuals interested in organizing art showcases – and to create the opportunity to do so in an innovative and inspiring environment.” says Marshal. Interested participants can contact: techgardenart@gmail.com for more information.
