The American Assembly, in partnership with CenterState CEO, Syracuse University, and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Buffalo, will convene a group of leaders from Upstate New York to analyze successes and ongoing challenges that legacy cities have had in transforming their economies and communities toward competitiveness in the 21st century global economy. Participants will convene in small discussion groups focused on particular initiatives and challenges that are economic development priorities for the region. Groups will focus on::
- Designing the region to support historic and emerging economic development such as the clean-green economy
- Building a world class innovation and an entrepreneurship ecosystem
- Strengthening competitiveness in and connections to global exports and commerce
- Enhancing land use decisions through innovative approaches
- Revitalizing urban cores through anchor institution investment, workforce development and rethinking urban education
These conversations will be designed to result in a set of recommendations, to be printed in a follow up handbook, on how the Legacy Cities in Upstate New York may continue and accelerate their upward economic trajectory.
