Founded in 1973, Syracuse Opera has over 30 years of production experience and is the only year-round professional opera company serving upstate New York. Syracuse Opera welcomes students as interns on a regular basis, both on the administrative side (public relations, marketing, and fundraising) and the production side (assistant stage managers, supernumeraries, etc.). Many students also sing in the Syracuse Opera Chorus, which performs regularly with Opera productions.

Premiering for the first time in February is the genre-busting, multimedia concert event, The Flying Dutchman. Based on the legend of a cursed sea captain, the opera captures the yearning he felt through projected images and innovative lighting, as well as music from the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.

The Flying Dutchman is being produced in partnership with Syracuse University’s Urban Video Project and COLAB with SU students creating the video imagery that will be projected during the show.

Led by Adam Brown, an adjunct instructor in the School of Art and Design, the opera was broken down into 12 excerpts  interpreted by students. The results are vivid reflections of the emotion and actions arising throughout the opera.

COLAB, located in the College of Visual Performing Arts, works with students, faculty and community partners to solve complex, real-world problems using diverse skillsets and creative perspectives.

The show will be held on Friday, February 26, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 28, at 2:00 p.m. at the Crouse-Hinds Theater in the John H. Mulroy Civic Center. Tickets start at $18. To purchase, please visit Syracuse Opera.
