Experimental outdoor video installations to be held April 19-20 at venues across Syracuse

On April 19, in conjunction with Th3, a citywide arts open held on the third Thursday of every month, UVP will project on the Redhouse at 201 S. West St. at 5 p.m., and on The Post-Standard Building and the Amos Building, both on Clinton Square, at dusk. On April 20, UVP will project on the exterior of the Palace Theatre & Cafe at 2384 James St. at dusk.

“The Urban Video Project is interested in introducing the general public to contemporary art while encouraging further activity in underutilized public spaces,” says Christopher Gianunzio, one of three graduate students in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) who work on the project. “We chose Clinton Square as one of our venues because we want to re-introduce the idea of the square as a destination and not a thruway.”

Inspired by the Connective Corridor and Th3, UVP is the brainchild of the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force, Gianunzio, and fellow VPA graduate students Blake Carrington and Colin Todd. A public arts initiative, UVP seeks to bring art to the streets and buildings of Syracuse using multiple video projections, six-channel sound and performance to explore new forms of cartography that challenge traditional functions and perceptions of urban space and identity. Working closely with many University and community partners, UVP produces installations throughout the year.

The Connective Corridor is an urban entrepreneurial zone linking a vast array of arts and cultural venues, businesses and neighborhoods in Syracuse. Both a place to be and the site of a world-class urban design project, the Connective Corridor is a cultural and economic magnet for the region that engages the city of Syracuse, SU, arts and cultural organizations, and businesses as partners.

The Connective Corridor Shuttle Bus (Centro Route #543) will operate during the spring months on Thursdays and Fridays from 5-11:40 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-11:40 p.m. The free shuttle service provides a convenient way to travel to cultural events and happenings at SU and in downtown Syracuse, including Th3.
